Best Family Vacations Under $3,000 in 2026

These destinations actually deliver on the promise. All estimates are for a family of 4 (2 adults, 2 kids) including flights or drive, hotel or rental, and activities — not just the hotel rate.

How we calculated these budgets

Flights: average economy fares searched May 2026 for June/September travel. Hotel: mid-range property, 5 nights. Activities: realistic daily spend for family of 4. No Disney or resort fees included unless specifically noted.

Myrtle Beach, SC

$1,200–$1,800 total for 4

East Coast families, ages 3–12

Drives cheaply from most of the East Coast. Hotels directly on the beach start at $80/night off-peak. Boardwalk mini golf and arcades keep kids busy for $30/day. Ocean is calm and family-friendly.

Pro tip: Book the last week of May or first week of June — schools are still in, prices drop 40%, beach is uncrowded.

San Antonio, TX

$1,500–$2,200 total for 4

History-curious families, ages 6–14

The River Walk is genuinely free entertainment. The Alamo is free. SeaWorld San Antonio is cheaper than Orlando by 50%. Flights from most US cities are reasonable. Food is excellent and affordable.

Pro tip: Natural Bridge Caverns ($25/adult, $18/kid) is one of the best cave tours in the US and takes a full afternoon.

Smoky Mountains, TN

$900–$1,600 total for 4

Outdoor families, ages 4+

National park entry is free. Hiking is free. Gatlinburg has enough paid attractions (aquarium, Ripley's, go-karts) to fill several days. Cabin rentals with full kitchens cut food costs dramatically.

Pro tip: Rent a cabin with a hot tub in Pigeon Forge instead of a hotel. Sleeps 6 for the same price as a hotel room, and kids love having their own space.

Washington D.C.

$1,800–$2,600 total for 4

Curious kids ages 7+, families who love learning

Every Smithsonian museum is free. The National Zoo is free. The Air and Space Museum, Natural History Museum, American History Museum — all free. You can do 4 full days of world-class entertainment for zero dollars in admission.

Pro tip: Stay in Arlington, VA (just across the river). 30% cheaper than D.C. hotels, Metro access into the city, and free parking.

Gulf Shores, AL

$1,100–$1,700 total for 4

Young families who love the beach, ages 1–10

The Gulf water is warm, clear, and calm — better for young kids than Atlantic beaches. Condos with kitchens are affordable. The Alabama Gulf Coast Zoo is a hidden gem. Far less crowded than Florida beaches.

Pro tip: Book a condo directly (not through a hotel) for 4+ nights. Gulf Shores condos with a pool, beach access, and full kitchen start at $150/night — split 2 families and it's unbeatable.

Strategies That Cut Any Family Vacation Budget

Fly Tuesday or Wednesday

Family of 4 flights are $200–$400 cheaper mid-week on most routes. This alone can shift your budget category.

Book condos with kitchens

Even one breakfast and one dinner per day cooked in the condo saves $80–$120 for a family of 4. Over 5 nights that's $400–$600.

Travel in late May or September

School is in session, prices drop, crowds thin. Late May is 30–40% cheaper than July at most beach destinations.

Look for free museum days

Most major city museums have free admission 1–2 days/month. Plan around these and save $60–$100 in admission per family.

Use a travel credit card

If you're putting $3,000 on a card anyway, use one that earns points. Chase Sapphire Preferred alone gives $600+ in value on a $3,000 spend.
