Disney World with Kids: The Complete 2025 Family Guide

We have taken our kids to Disney World four times. Here is everything we wish we had known before that first trip — from crowd-dodging strategies to the exact rides worth skipping the line for, broken down by your kids' ages.

Best Time to Visit Disney World with Kids

Picking the right week can cut your wait times in half and drop hotel prices by 30%. Here is what the calendar actually looks like for families:

MonthCrowd LevelNotes for Families
January (mid)LowBest value of the year. After MLK weekend, crowds drop sharply. Cooler temps make walking comfortable.
FebruaryLow–MediumGreat weather (mid-70s), reasonable prices. Presidents' Day week gets busy — avoid it.
March–AprilVery HighSpring break and Easter crush. If you must go, aim for early March before schools let out.
May (early)MediumCrowds thin after Easter, schools still in session. One of the hidden sweet spots.
June–AugustHigh + HotSummer crowds plus Florida heat and daily thunderstorms. Toddlers and little ones can struggle. Plan water breaks.
SeptemberLowThe best-kept secret. Schools are back, crowds thin dramatically. Still warm but manageable.
OctoberMedium–HighMickey's Not-So-Scary Halloween Party draws crowds. Book early and choose non-party nights.
November (early)Low–MediumBefore Thanksgiving week: excellent. Great weather, decent prices. Thanksgiving week itself is a madhouse.
DecemberVery HighChristmas decor is magical but crowds are brutal Dec 26–31. First two weeks of December are actually calm and festive.

Our verdict: Mid-January, early May, and September deliver the best combination of value, short lines, and comfortable weather for families with kids.

Where to Stay: Best Hotels for Disney World Families

Must-Do Rides by Age Group

Not every ride is right for every kid. Here is our honest breakdown after multiple trips with kids of different ages — prioritize these to make the most of your Lightning Lane passes.

Toddlers (2–4)

  • Magic Kingdom: Dumbo, Carousel of Progress, It's a Small World, Winnie the Pooh
  • EPCOT: Living with the Land, Spaceship Earth, Remy's Ratatouille Adventure
  • Hollywood Studios: Toy Story Midway Mania (great for this age), Alien Swirling Saucers
  • Animal Kingdom: Kilimanjaro Safaris, Triceratop Spin

Skip: anything loud, dark, or with sudden drops. Save time and meltdowns.

Kids 5–8

  • Magic Kingdom: Seven Dwarfs Mine Train (use Lightning Lane), Haunted Mansion, Pirates
  • EPCOT: Guardians of the Galaxy (if they can handle it), Test Track
  • Hollywood Studios: Slinky Dog Dash, Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run
  • Animal Kingdom: Avatar Flight of Passage (might be intense), Expedition Everest

This age group can handle most family coasters. Watch for height requirements.

Kids 9+

  • Magic Kingdom: Tron Lightcycle Run (Lightning Lane essential), Space Mountain, Big Thunder
  • EPCOT: Guardians of the Galaxy Cosmic Rewind, Test Track
  • Hollywood Studios: Tower of Terror, Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance
  • Animal Kingdom: Avatar Flight of Passage, Expedition Everest

Tron and Rise of the Resistance are the crown jewels — get Lightning Lane for both on day one.

Upgrade Your Disney Trip: Tours Worth Booking

These guided experiences can transform a good Disney trip into an unforgettable one — especially for families who want to skip the chaos and get front-of-the-line treatment.

Money-Saving Tips for Disney World Families

A family of four can easily spend $5,000+ on a Disney World trip. These strategies can take a meaningful bite out of that number without cutting out anything essential.

Buy tickets before your trip

Disney tickets are almost always cheaper through authorized resellers like Undercover Tourist than at the gate. Budget $30–50 per person per day in savings.

Eat breakfast at your hotel

Grab milk, cereal, and snacks at a grocery store and eat in your room. This alone can save a family of four $50–80 per day over park breakfast prices.

Visit a Value or Moderate resort — not off-site

Off-site hotels seem cheaper, but once you factor in transportation time and costs, plus missing early park entry, on-property Value resorts often win.

Use the free Disney transportation

You do not need a rental car if you stay on-site. The Magical Express bus, boat, and monorail system covers all four parks and Disney Springs.

Pack refillable water bottles

Disney provides free water at any quick-service location. Bringing your own bottles saves $4–6 per bottle per day.

Plan your Lightning Lane buys carefully

Lightning Lane Multi Pass is worth it for Magic Kingdom days with young kids. Individual Lightning Lane passes are only worth it for Tron and Rise of the Resistance.
