Hawaii with Kids: Island-by-Island Family Guide

The right island matters more than any hotel or activity. Here's how to choose.

Which Island Is Right for Your Family?

🌺

Maui

Best for beach families
$$$$
Best for: Families with kids 5+, beach lovers, snorkelers
Top beaches: Ka'anapali, Kaanapali Beach, Makena "Big Beach"

Most expensive island. Worth it for Snorkel at Molokini, Road to Hana, and whale watching (Dec–April).

🌊

Oahu

Best for first-timers + budget
$$$
Best for: First Hawaii trip, budget-conscious families, history fans
Top beaches: Waikiki, Lanikai, Kailua Beach

Most infrastructure, most flights, most things to do. Waikiki Beach is calm and good for young kids. Pearl Harbor is compelling for kids 8+.

🌿

Kauai

Best for adventure families
$$$
Best for: Outdoorsy families, kids 8+, hikers
Top beaches: Poipu Beach (family favorite), Hanalei Bay

Least developed, most dramatic scenery. Na Pali Coast boat tours are unforgettable. Poipu Beach has a protected snorkeling lagoon perfect for kids.

πŸŒ‹

Big Island

Best for science-curious kids
$$$
Best for: Kids fascinated by volcanoes, stargazing families
Top beaches: Hapuna Beach, Mauna Kea

Volcanoes National Park is unmissable β€” real active lava flows (season-dependent). Two very different climates on one island.

Inter-Island Logistics

Inter-island flights are short (20-45 min) and cheap if booked in advance. Hawaiian Airlines and Southwest both serve the main routes. Book 6+ weeks out for best prices.

Two-island trips are popular: Oahu (2-3 nights) + Maui or Kauai (4-5 nights). This gives you the convenience of Honolulu's airport with a more relaxed second island.

Car rental is essential on every island except Oahu (where Waikiki is walkable). Book in advance β€” Hawaii car rentals sell out, especially in summer.

Budget Tips

  • βœ“ Fly into Honolulu β€” OGG (Maui) and LIH (Kauai) flights are significantly more expensive
  • βœ“ Book accommodations 4-6 months out β€” Hawaii hotel inventory is small and prices spike
  • βœ“ Grocery store meals 1-2x/day β€” restaurant prices in Hawaii are 40-60% higher than mainland
  • βœ“ Free snorkeling beats paid tours β€” Poipu, Kailua, and Sharks Cove (Oahu) are free and excellent
  • βœ“ Visit state parks vs. resort beaches β€” same ocean, no parking fees at public beaches
