London with Kids: The Honest Family Guide for 2025
London's world-class museums are all free, the public transport is excellent, and Harry Potter is everywhere — it's one of the best cities in the world for families.
Best Free Things to Do in London with Kids
The UK's national museums are free — an extraordinary gift for families. Budget zero for museum admission and spend the savings on experiences.
Natural History Museum Best for Kids Under 10
The massive blue whale skeleton in the entrance hall, the animatronic T-Rex, the earthquake simulator — this museum is genuinely spectacular and completely free. Allow 3 hours minimum.
Science Museum Best for Ages 6+
Next door to the Natural History Museum — interactive space exhibits, a full-size Apollo 10 capsule, and a hands-on Wonderlab (small fee). Kids could spend a full day here.
British Museum & V&A Museum of Childhood
The British Museum has the Rosetta Stone and Egyptian mummies — kids are riveted. The V&A Museum of Childhood in Bethnal Green has a jaw-dropping toy collection spanning 400 years.
Changing of the Guard & Royal Parks
Free. Buckingham Palace changing ceremony (check schedule — not daily). Hyde Park has a massive Diana Memorial Playground with a pirate ship — completely free and beloved by London families.
Harry Potter London — Essential for Fans
Warner Bros. Studio Tour Don't Miss
30 minutes outside London in Watford — the actual Great Hall, original costumes, real sets, Diagon Alley, the Hogwarts Express. Book tickets at least 4–6 weeks in advance; it sells out. Adults ~£55, kids ~£45.
Take the train from London Euston to Watford Junction, then a studio shuttle.
Platform 9¾ at King's Cross Station
The trolley in the wall is free to see and photograph (queue for the photo, 15–30 min). The Harry Potter shop inside is worth a browse. Combine with the free British Library nearby.
Where to Stay with Kids
South Kensington Best Overall
Walking distance from Natural History Museum, Science Museum, and V&A. Hyde Park nearby. Family-friendly hotels at various budgets. Premier Inn South Kensington is excellent value with a family room.
Covent Garden / Southwark
Central, vibrant, near the Thames. Street performers at Covent Garden Market entertain kids for free. Cross the Millennium Bridge to the Tate Modern (free) and Shakespeare's Globe.
Tip: Apartment vs. Hotel
For families of 4+, a serviced apartment through Booking.com often beats a hotel — kitchen saves money on breakfast/snacks, more space for kids, often in residential neighborhoods that feel more authentic.
