Best Beach Vacations for Kids 2026
Not all beach towns work for families. Here's where the water is safe, the sand is clean, and the surrounding town is built for kids — not nightlife.
What makes a beach good for kids?
- • Calm, warm water without strong rip currents or undertow
- • Gradual depth that stays shallow for a long distance
- • Beach access that doesn't require a long hike
- • Nearby activities when sun/sand gets old
- • Family-oriented town (not a party destination)
Sanibel Island, Florida
Best for shells and calm water
Best for: ages All ages
Sanibel has some of the best shelling in North America — the island orientation traps shells on the beach rather than washing them back out. The Gulf water on the south side is warm and calm. Lee County's free beach access means you can park and explore without resort fees.
Insider tip: Stay on the east end near Lighthouse Beach for walking distance to the best shelling at low tide.
Bethany Beach, Delaware
Best quiet family beach on the East Coast
Best for: ages 3-14
Bethany Beach bans alcohol on the beach, has a strict quiet zone ordinance, and has been called "the quiet resort" for over 100 years. The boardwalk is tiny (one block), the waves are manageable, and the town is built for families. 20% cheaper than Ocean City.
Insider tip: Book a house rental near the north end for easier beach access. Most properties are within 3 blocks of the water.
Kiawah Island, South Carolina
Best upscale family beach
Best for: ages 5+
Ten miles of private beach with almost no commercial development. The Kiawah Island Golf Resort has excellent kids' programming. The beach itself has gentle waves, good for boogie boarding for older kids. Sea turtle nesting season (May-August) is a legitimate wildlife experience.
Insider tip: Rent bikes — the island has 30+ miles of flat paved trails and bike access to the beach.
Virginia Beach, Virginia
Best value large beach city
Best for: ages All ages
Three miles of public beach, an actual boardwalk with rides and aquarium, and hotel prices 40-60% lower than similar Florida beaches. The Atlantic side is active — good for older kids who want waves. The bay side (Chesapeake Bay) is calmer for younger children.
Insider tip: Go the last two weeks of May or first two weeks of June — schools are still in, weather is perfect, hotels are 30% cheaper.
